Experience
A professional palaeozoological lecturer, researcher, author, editor and consultant based at the University of Southampton (UK), I produce technical research on dinosaurs, pterosaurs, marine reptiles and other animals; I also have vested interests in conservation biology, academic cryptozoology, wildlife management and animal behaviour. I have discovered new dinosaurs, pterosaurs and other fossil animals in museum collections here in the UK as well as during field research in eastern Europe, north Africa and elsewhere. I have worked since 2006 as an author and editor and have written or co-written numerous books for both popular and technical audiences, including Walking With Dinosaurs: The Evidence (2000, BBC, with D. M. Martill), The Great Dinosaur Discoveries (2009, A&C Black), Tetrapod Zoology: Book One (2010, CFZ Press), Dinosaur Record Breakers (2011, Carlton) and All Yesterdays (2012, Irregular Books, with John Conway and C. M. Kosemen). I blog at the Scientific American-hosted Tetrapod Zoology and am heavily involved in science communication. I frequently act as consultant or expert for TV. I lecture to technical and popular audiences and have led courses on vertebrate evolutionary history for undergraduate students as well as adult learners.
